I haven't read anything by this author. Is it better to start with this series or the Earthsea Cycle?

Currently the order is:
1. The Wizard of Earthsea (Earthsea #1)
2. The Left Hand of Darknes (Hainish #4)
3. The Dispossesed (Hainish #6)

The Hainish Cycle can be read in any order. And the books and themes are quite different, so some may appeal to you more than others. So starting with 4 or 6 is quite al right and you will miss nothing (or very little)(less)
