Usually the characters in my head won't allow me to sleep. Once they are free from my subconscious, they harangue me on pretty much a daily basis, until they have beaten me down so much that I have no choice but to write about them. Strangely enough, once I do, they tend to move on.
Except for The Red Rover, of course. For some reason, these guys are content to hang around for a little while longer.
