I don't know for certain, but my best guess was a night-blooming flower. Since it's supposed to be "pale as the moon", the most likely seemed to be one with a white flower, such as night-blooming jasmine or night phlox. If my guess is at all in the right ballpark, the best answer might actually be night-blooming cereus, a favorite of mine which has flowers that actually last only one night ("only as long" as the moon is out) -- although lasting only as long as the moon is out could also poetically refer to any night bloom.
