Nate Mittelbrun The book centers around a halfway house and deals strongly with the topic of addiction. Substance abuse is intensely and graphically depicted throughout the novel and may be unsuitable for a 15-year old. For a 1,000+ page book there are few scenes of violence, however the 3 or 4 that do occur are extended, BRUTALLY GRAPHIC, and very possibly disturbing to a younger audience. Sexual content is referenced periodically throughout the novel, however never in graphic detail, and is usually limited to a PG-13 level. Also, as a note, there is strong language throughout.
Nate There is violence. There is sexual content. The thing about the sexual content is that there is very little conventional, consensual sex. Sex presents itself in this book as almost always abusive, violent, obsessive or dysfunctional in some way, eg, rape and child abuse. There is often a victim. Often the sexual victim is a child. With that said, there's a lot more "mature content" in Infinite Jest beyond sex and violence that requires maturity. It's filled with heavy content from addiction to suicide to sexual abuse to animal abuse, the list goes on and on and on. It gets pretty twisted. So, if mature content is the concern, definitely hold off until like 30 or 40 years old ;)
