Some will see it as romance (which it isn’t), and others a grotesque story about a delusional pedophile (which it is). If your in the correct state of mind and are going into the novel privy with the knowledge about the unreliable narrator and his manipulative position throughout the novel then i think you’ll be fine. Even without knowledge of this fact, I’m sure most would pick it up. I have heard a lot of anecdotes from others who have read the novel internalising some of the very scary themes, so be weary.
