However, I read it around the ages of 17-19, a bit too old for the likes of Humbert Humbert. Don't read it with those who think this is a "romance" to heart. Put yourself in Dolores' shoes, aka "Lolita".

I would suggest to any young person wanting to read this that you pay special attention to the things Humbert Humbert chooses to gloss over, pay attention to the things he seems to obfuscate. Really question what Dolores aka Lolita must be thinking or feeling. Imagine what her daily life must be like. Then, seriously ask yourself if you think Humbert Humbert's portrayal of this 12-14 year old girl could actually be accurate in anyway? Ask yourself why he chooses to call her Lolita when she has her name. Do you think he is telling the truth? Does he have any incentive to lie? Really question the series of events. If you really want to go into it, look at the way many currently convicted pedophiles talk about their victims. Do you see any similarities?

I think it could serve as a lesson in critically thinking about the unreliable narrators you will not only read about but meet in life. Especially for those who are "sheltered". There are a lot of people in this world who would more quickly commodify you than see/treat you as your own complete and autonomous person.

Also - enjoy the language. It may be one of the more unique rides you'll ever take.(less)
