Just finished reading it.
TIDELANDS by Philippa Gregory is a historical mystery that will transport you back in time to the mid-sixteen hundreds. A perilous time for women, especially women who could easily be pointed out as a witch. I have not read this author’s novels previously. I just love historical thrillers! I could tell right away that the story was setting up a new series that I’m sure will garner many new readers to the story about Alinor and her children. Alinor copes the best she can with a “missing husband” that she would appreciate remaining missing. Lol. Her children mean everything to her. But, despite all of this.. she makes a decision to assist a fugitive of the ongoing religious war that is taking place in Britain. This is during the time that Brits guilty of practicing Catholicism could be arrested and most likely found guilty of whatever and put to death. I enjoyed the story quite a bit! I found it to have quite a bit of set up in the beginning and then the story starts picking up speed. I look forward to reading the next book in the series as I was left waiting to find out more.. much, much more! Good stuff!

Very disappointing to Philippa Gregory fans, IMO. I’ve read most of her historical novels and this one could have had a ghost writer, or maybe it’s intended to be a Young Adult book. Simplified language. I’m guessing the target audience are folks who like serial romance-adventure stories. I doubt I’ll waste my time finishing it.

This is a wonderful book with a beautifully descriptive setting! It definitely makes you grateful to be a woman in the 21st century as opposed to the 17th! I’m ashamed to admit it was my first Philippa Gregory book but it will not be my last! I can’t wait for the rest of the series to see how this line goes from rags to riches,. Tidelands is definitely the rags part of that story though!

I got it from the library and I'm so glad I didn't buy it. The price has come down since it was released, but still too much for a short story. The story itself was rather a disappointment, too many of those few pages are devoted to descriptions of the scenery and too few to the actual plot. Overall I found it to be a real sleeper.

Yes. I enjoyed Tidelands it was different from Gregory's usual historical fiction about royal queens. The protagonist is not a famous, or even well-known woman, just a poor woman struggling to support her 2 children with few resources. The 17th Century was one of great challenge for Royalists and those who still followed the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church in England. Cromwell with his parliament wield all the power and, at the same time, take all the joy out of traditional Christmas celebrations. The descriptions of the tidal area of Sussex is also very interesting
