Isn't Amara around 18? and Bernard is 40-ish? Is no one else weirded out by their huge age difference? It's honestly the main thing that's turning me off from continuing this book.
Nirkatze I've been trying to figure this out too.

I've been trying to figure this out too.

At some point, it mentions that Isana has less than 40 years. I think (but could be mistaken) that it says she is 37 somewhere.

Isana had a younger sister who was about 10 years younger than Isana, and was 15-16 when Tavi was born, which puts Isana closer to 39.

Bernard is Isana's younger brother, but I'm not sure if he is the middle child or youngest. He was on his first tour of the legions when Isana & sister were doing their tour of duty. That would make him anywhere from 14-18 at that time (judging off Tavi's age, age of the fish in book 3, and a comment about delaying Tavi's service until a promising legion was available).

So, Bernard could be anywhere from 29-35 or so in the first book

Amara, if at the same point in her studies as Tavi in book 2, is probably about 18-22.

Since it never specifically says how old they are, you can probably choose the age that makes you feel most comfortable. I went for the closest age gap myself. I know large age gaps are not uncommon, and can be very happy, but they do make me cringe.(less)
