i don't believe she knew about the split personality at all. i think the author tried to throw us off the track early on when he wrote that "there had been a time in the past when richard and mira could occasionally be in the same room together, but that time was long gone" and later that "she hadn't seen richard in years" so that she knew him as a separate person. it's confusing and a big plot hole.

Yeah this really bothered me and is the reason I gave it 3 stars. I had to go back and re-read that part when Mira came home. "She hadn't seen Richard in years". I feel certain that she knew, but it could have been written better by Swanson.
Susan St. James
I believe Mira did know about the multi-personality thing of Matthew/Richard. When she says "hadn't thought about him in years" I think she is referring to the fact that the Richard personality may not have come out (of Matthew) in a while. Remember, Richard is only around when Mira is out of town.
Lisa Costanzo
I personally just thought Mathew had spoken of Richard in the past and Mira did not like him or want him around. Maybe Mathew had mentioned that he came over once in a while when she was out of town. I didn’t take it that she knew about the “split”.

I have been racking my brain about this same question. I went back and reread that part to make sure Mira had mentioned Richard. I do think this should have been left out, or better explained.

Yes! That’s what I was wondering about too. Please let me know when someone has the answers!

I just finished reading this book and had the exact same question!! If she knew, why wouldn't she get help for him? If she didn't know, how did she meet Richard and not like him? *pulls hair out*

I wonder if this is a recycling of a novel by John D McDonald. Swanson refers to McDonald in his Acknowledgements, and it feels like the kind of twisty slick story McDonald could do easily, although in South Florida, of course. It's got some feeling of a 1960s or 70s story. Anyone else have this thought?
