Promotes listening to those who have problems/issues and letting them have a say in how best to handle the problem. For example, passing out condoms signals to police and men in other cultures that the woman is a sex worker, who then gets beat up.

I do NOT see it as similar to "Becoming." That one is all memoir; Gates' book is minimally memoir.(less)
