I think it says best friends since the relationship never develops into anything but a friendship. While Darius is clearly questioning his sexuality, it is never stated that Sohrab has feelings for him. This is why its marked as LGBTQ+ and says best friends. (In fact, in the sequel, Darius gets a boyfriend that ISN'T Sohrab.) I know this is late but I hope it helps.

That's because sadly when guys who are friends and are anything but, put their arms around each other or on their shoulders or even hold hands for that matter, are considered gay compulsively. Sad, but true.

Just announced sequel, "Darius The Great Deserves Better", press release mentions Darius has "a first boyfriend".
I haven't read this book yet, but I'm assuming that means this is about the non-gay parts of discovering himself?
