Society finds it hard to accept a mother is capable of abuse. Just look at some of the comments in the reviews to see this. She went onto abuse another son after David left. The great sad fact is this kind of abuse, maybe not in severity, is quite common on goes unoticed because its just not accepted by society http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/74...

No she didn't.
In fact there were no charges ever placed against her. Nor is there any evidence that she committed those acts against Pelzer.
If it had happened, why is there no evidence?

For those with doubts, in the 70's, the subject of child abuse was not openly discussed. I can only say for sure, that it did happen during my childhood. The primary victim in my family did nothing to deserve the beatings. I have spent 50 years trying to understand why he was chosen to receive these endless beatings. There was no 911 yet. A child dared not call police.

Of course they went to jail! Police officers took away the rest of her children and took her to jail

She would have if this happened today. They are much more on it then they were before. James Patrick, why would anyone write these books if they were not the truth. The proof is in the photos of him all bruised and battered. Also, his Brother who was also beaten after Dave left, admitted that their Mother was an abuser.

no because i read all the books. she kept all the other children and was not pressed with charges. she should have but was not. its a whole lot of craps.

Part of the law state that if you abuse a child and or person of any sort, and if you have a medical history that may affect your mood and the activity you do,then you don't go to jail. Catherine was not taken to jail, and because of this went on to abusing another child. Sometimes I just think they could have done something more.

Catherine Pelzer, the mother of Dave Pelzer, was never charged or incarcerated for child abuse. Despite the harrowing experiences Dave described in his memoir, "A Child Called It," there is no official record of her facing legal repercussions. After Dave was taken from her home, it is reported that his brother Richard then became the focus of her abusive behavior.

She was never sent to jail but I think she should have.

No she wasn't. The child abuse laws in the 1970s in the U.S. were not very strong.
