Goodreads asked Laura Lee:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Laura Lee Identity Theft, my forthcoming novel, came from a lot of different places. The earliest kernel of it came back in the days when the internet was new and it was novel to sign onto AOL for DOS with a dial up modem and meet people with similar interests on line. I wanted to write something that explored those kind of screen-name interactions and the fast intimacy and anonymity it created. Now it is no longer novel, it is a factor of all of our lives. But the same sorts of issues still exist.

I've also had an interest in public personas, the grand public persona of a celebrity and the small version-- the online persona we've become accustomed to creating for Facebook.

Finding the right dramatic narrative to zip through those ideas was the big challenge. Even though the initial spark came a long time ago, the book feels very current. It is very much shaped by the post-recession culture and the sense of dimmed hopes that many people experienced in the post-bubble years.
