Goodreads asked Samuel Michael Lemon:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Samuel Michael Lemon Try to write as often and as much as possible. It's like any other skill or form of exercise -- the more you do it, the better you become. It's usually easier to go back and edit or pare down your work, than to try to expand it. I try to just get down as much of the article or chapter as possible, and then go back and edit -- rather than try to strive for perfection while I'm writing. Aspiring writers should also develop good writing skills, in terms of use of spelling, grammar, format, citations (if you're quoting other people's work), and formatting. Always use a dictionary, writer's guide, and a thesaurus -- which will help you to avoid using the same words repetitively. There may be a million words in the English language, but many people only use about 3,000. Stretch your use of language.
