One of my favorite things about Barrayar (the book) is how Aral maintains personal moral integrity in a situation where there is no "good", just "really bad" and "slightly less bad". I am interested in Aral's time as Regent during the Komarr Revolt, and how he maintains his own moral center through a nihilist conflict; also, since I'm wishing, one day I hope you can finish the sequel to Falling Free?

So, re-reading Penric, I got to thinking about the problem of demons jumping from humans to animals, and Des' reluctance to end up in a dolphin. Because dolphins are pretty smart, really. And then that got me wondering about how often that Roknari trick with the cushion...backfires. I mean, what if instead of a jellyfish the demon jumps into a passing shark? Or a sperm whale? Not to make any literary allusions.

George Eliot wrote always with a sense of failure and doom. Nabokov was fully aware of his greatness. I think you must be somewhat aware. Not wishing for a response here, I’ll just say that talent at a certain level carries the obligation to write, especially if it’s not fading. We’re all at our full powers only so long, but some writers soar well into “retirement” years. I’m afraid you’re still on obligation status.?
