There seem to be several nods to "Hotel California" by the Eagles, throughout the book (including an undercurrent of California's omnipresent pull). Was this intentional? And is the title "Malibu Motel" one of the nods to that song?

Chaunceton Bird Yes, the homages to Hotel California throughout the book were intentional. California is such a vice-ridden paradise that many (including myself) have trouble escaping. The title "Malibu Motel" is another nod to Hotel California, but it is also suggestive of the story arc, with "Malibu" suggesting affluence, and "Motel" suggesting the opposite.
