Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Chaunceton Bird The idea for Malibu Motel basically hit me over the head. My stepfather won the California state lottery in 1998 and has been squandering millions ever since. By the early 2010s he had spent through most of it, and by 2017 he was living in a friend's garage living off of cigarettes and heroin. Later in 2017 the FBI arrested him on ten counts of bank robbery. Malibu Motel is inspired by his story.

Thanks for the answer. I truly appreciate it. However, being a sensitive subject and all, how did he feel about having his story told by, well, you, of all people. Did you conduct interviews with him before writing the story or did you just rely on memory?

There seem to be several nods to "Hotel California" by the Eagles, throughout the book (including an undercurrent of California's omnipresent pull). Was this intentional? And is the title "Malibu Motel" one of the nods to that song?
