I assumed it was part of the craziness of a fire rescue- someone grabbed her and rescued her and when they asked someone said he was a college student and that is how they know. They said who died in the fire and would have mentioned if a rescuer had.
I think it is related to the Trolley Problem in that he rescues children who have more life ahead of them instead of Mei.

I feel like he just wouldn’t have wanted the credit....they mentioned people who had died in the fire. None sounded like him

I believe that matt just sorta disappeared from the plot and story at this point so it is up to you to figure that out and make your assumption with what happened
