Alex Bear Dang! I was kinda hoping he did die! Matt did my girl Mei wrong.

Hillary That part was devastating! I was really hoping that she'd prove him wrong. It reminded me of The Good Place with the character so stuck in his philosophies that he screws up his life.

Alex Bear Good comparison! I'm glad I didn't think of that while reading so I didn't have to imagine Chidi running in and out of those flames.

Monica I think he did try to save her from the fire. I think he yelled for her to get out but she was too weak because of the sickness and she just thought he would come back and get her.

BookstagramETC Haha, I was totally mad at "Weird Matthew" for that move too!

message 6: by Dini (new)

Dini I was mad at Matthew too. I wished we heard more about him after the fire, especially how he actually felt about not saving Mei. Did he truly have no feelings for her at all (even as friends?) and didn't regret all his 'logical' decision-making?

The Mei and Matthew story line was unsatisfying for me because Mei was trying to become a bolder person by going out there and volunteering during the crisis, but what she got in return was Matthew choosing others to save first because he thought their lives were worth more than Mei's. Did that mean she shouldn't have bothered and should have stuck to being her timid self just to be safe? I'm not sure what the author was trying to come across here.

Becky Matt was forced to make one of his life or death choices he always posed to others. Save your friend or save the baby. He chose the baby.

message 8: by Kealy (new)

Kealy Notice he was the only one that chose someone other that the one he was close to. It seemed fitting, but what was unfitting was that we didn't get closure to it. I guess the closure is that he was a big deal in the media's eye, which would have been entirely against what he claimed to want: living alone in the woods on the poorest of monies.
