Jerilyn It may also be symbolic that she is forever changed, no longer “whole”.
Dennis D. I thought this was a last representation at how Rufus, even as he is dying, can't let Dana go. Her hand and forearm stay in the past (forever) with Rufus.
Alarna Maybe she did need him to travel back and he died before her whole body could get through.

Ar I wondered about this myself. I get that it was due to her arm being trapped under Rufus during her last trip. But the transition from Rufus to the wall seemed rather random, unless I'm missing some symbolism or deeper meaning there.

OK the whole novel is fantastical but I could follow the logic of the warp in other parts but that one stuck out for me too.
Ishie Sancho It's symbolic for the "wall" as the institution of slavery, but it doesn't really forgive the execution of it since it isn't introduced to her ever except then, as any form of threat. It's like an anvil to the reader, like we hadn't already accepted the premise that slavery is bad.
