I don't profess to have any definite answers and like everything else in life it's often a combination of hard work, luck, perseverance and spotting opportunities etc.
The best advice I ever got re the arts is that "if you're not doing anything different, you're not doing anything at all". There is so much repetition out there in books (and films and music), many are trying to replicate what worked for others...And these industries are all so competitive, that I think authors (and artists in general) need to focus on what they can do that's very unique and will therefore attract a niche readership/audience/market. However, the catch is it needs to be authentic and not gimmicky -- something that you are passionate about and good at doing will feel organic.
