Chris Ivie as david said, not required but youre missing out on a lot of amazing stories! start at the beginning, i did :)
Dan Shonka No. One thing Connelly does very well is sneak/blend previous stories’ summaries into the context of each individual story.
Steve I sort of grew old with Harry Bosch and his creator, Michael Connelly from the days of Black Ice and VN to the present of which is the society we live in now. My stats of authors "read" to date would attest to that fact.
David Well not really, you will understand the story perfectly. But you will miss the psychology of the characters and its current situation (especially Bosh) from the previous books.
Keoki Read all Bosch, Reacher n Alex Cross books up through 2012 or 13. Stopped reading just started again in 2018. Alternating between 1 fiction then 1 Military History. I retired '93 Cmd Sen Chief so most reading was from WWII thru current conflicts. I've been active Interviewing Veterans for Veterans History Project and reading Mil History, gives me a better insight what veterans lived through beyond my own history. Tried reading Mil History from the Civil War and had trouble grasping the history of that period. Flags of our Fathers and a War To Far were great reads.
Michael L Wilkerson (Papa Gray Wolf) Let me add my agreement to those who say no, not necessary but certainly a good idea. Bosch has such a history that you can't encompass nearly all of it in tidbits in a current novel and though this is Ballard's 2nd book there was still so much detail in The Late Show, the 1st Ballard book, that it too cannot be all inclusive in tidbits.

Happy reading to you.
Kate Not necessary - we started with this one - in the Bosch/Renee Ballard series, that is. Now I want to go back and read the first one with Renee Ballard. I think it might be a little problematic if you didn't know the background of either of the characters - I'd start with one of the earlier Bosch books - or catch up by watching the tv series, which is excellent (if not exactly like the books).
