Can a first-time reader of the series get into this book, or should one really begin with the first book?

George If nothing else, starting in the middle spoils the unpredictability of who lives and who dies.
Richard Baron I would definitely recommend reading the Slough House/Slow Horses books in order. I began with the 3rd book and enjoyed it but realized there was a lot I missed after I read the 1st.
Ed Stock There are plenty of book series where it doesn't really matter whether you've read all of the previous books to appreciate and enjoy one from later in the series. This series isn't one of those. The histories of the characters - and of Slough House itself - are only fully understood by taking the books in order, and in this case I consider that understanding essential.
Charles This book more than others in the series heavily leverages long-term plotlines. It would be easier to with books #2 or #3 rather than this far along.
