As a fan of your work, it took me by surprise when I read that you were collaborating with the narrative of a video game called "Ashen." I can't begrudge you if your involvement is under disclosure, but the fact immensely fascinated me. Are there any hurdles in making a narrative for a video game medium that you've had/expect to overcome? Have you had any previous interest in the medium, personally or professionally?
Mark Lawrence
Hi JD. Video gaming has been listed on my profile here under hobbies since I joined in 2010, and I started playing them in the 70s.

I talk about my involvement with Ashen on my blog:

I didn't encounter any hurdles but I think I was several steps from the actual product, so the ideas, lore, history, characters and dialogue I came up with have probably been heavily filtered before fitting to the game, or simply used as a central reference for the large team working on it, in order to give them a unified vision to work toward.

Mark Lawrence:
I have been a beta reader several times for a known published author and while it is nice to be able to read a book before anyone else in the public, beta reading is also tedious work if it is done right. Do you have beta readers? How important are they to you in your work?

Hi Mark. I've almost finished Red Sister, which I'm enjoying a lot (100 pages to go). Before that I read Jay Kristoff's Nevernight trilogy and I am staggered by the many many similarities. I realise that both series were released close to each other so there was no copying... but were you aware that the books were similar soon after they were published? What was your reaction? :)

I found the Red Sister at my local library on the new fiction shelf and normally I would overlook it because it was a female base character with a male writer. ( I know , bias). I took a chance and absolutely loved it! I have not read any of your other books, however I am wondering if you base your characters on your own children's personalities or see them as your own super hero's? looking forward to the next one.
