The most telling scene is towards the end of the book when he is confronted by Virgil and Rune at his house and Adam escapes out the back door, shedding his clothes as he approaches the river -- all of a sudden, after he gets into the water, Rune sees the Sturgeon. Its as if he transforms into this killer fish. I don't think he directly killed anyone, but rather had a "hard luck" effect on those he encountered or he took items from. Voodoo-like. (less)
