There was another scene in the book, earlier, in which Adam Leer was seen swimming or bathing naked in the lake. Because of your comment and others here, I now see how he was somehow connected to death in a broader sense and is somehow linked to the death of those in the story. His name, Adam, recalls the first man and the Fall of man (leading to death). Interesting thoughts, all.
