Goodreads asked J. Douglas Bottorff:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

J. Douglas Bottorff Writing challenges me to clarify my thinking on a given subject. Most of us get inspiration and think, I could write a book about that. If you actually undertake the task of writing "a book about that" you discover that the inspiration is merely the tip of the iceberg, that there is always much more to that inspiration than you thought. Writing also forces you to give practical context to an inspiration in ways that can be useful to others. Inspiration is the exciting notion that the world really is round. Writing can take us around the world in a way that validates the inspiration.
