Because Jupe was HOT, remember? He was described as a 15 y.o. as being muscular and "strapping." That was when he first came to live with Neneva and Amos. Don't know how old he was when he and Liza hooked up, but I'm assuming he was in his early 20's. He had a crush on her when he was teenager, too, so I'm sure with two good looking, hormone-raging folks one thing did lead to another...

It was already inferred that she had an active sex drive and possibly Jupe was the only one paying any attention to her (though we will never know since he was basically introduced in the 5 minutes of a 14 hour book). Unfortunately it is also inferred that he gave her VD unless that was an infection from the botched abortion. Either way Mr man of few words Pete could have found a few to share with Rev. Bell before pulling the trigger.

Pete had been dead over a year in her mind and she was still a young woman. Also it was a moment in her life where she acted without thinking it through. I wonder if Pete would have killed Jupe if he had known the truth.
