If there weren't sequels planned, you'd be disappointed. But the story does reach a nice logical stopping point that is a satisfying place to pause.
Something the other answer didn't mention: Bennett is a much faster writer than your question implies, so you also won't be waiting forever. Book #2 is already slated for publication in August 2019, and he's published a book every year or two since 2012. Therefore, I expect the conclusion of the trilogy in 2020 or early 2021 at the latest.

Yes. It leaves a little something hanging to set up the sequel, but I think you can read this one and feel like it stands on its own.

Personally, I found the ending unsatisfying. Though the author does leave you at a reasonable stopping point, he dangles a bunch of loose ends in front of you just before closing the book. Anyone who was paying attention knew those threads were still there to be resolved, and intentionally raising them felt cheap. One step too far, like some Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys cliff-hanger business. Like, did you really need to put in a plug for your next book at the end of the first one? Just let us feel good about what your characters have accomplished for a second.
Fun book otherwise, though!
