I don't remember if this issue was ever addressed, and I didn't realize it, but what form of birth control is used by the people in the twelve systems? Considering that Lucius & Lilian have frequent sex and Lilian used the red ear gems to indicate she is having her monthly flow? I can't recall if this was ever mentioned? It just occurred to me after I finished the fourth book today.

The Twelve Systems is all about responsible (if frequent) sex. Lilian takes a quarterly contraceptive administered under the skin at the base of her thumb -- commonly known as the tattoo. Unless the intention is to conceive, for a man to have sex for a woman who does not display the tattoo is dishonorable and irresponsible. If you remember, there is a point in The Cartel when Lucius anxiously examines Lilian's hand to be sure the tattoo has not faded.
