I think that you are supposed to read Long Shot first because the characters from that book are featured in this book. And there are some spoilers. So if you are ever planning to read Long Shot then I would say that you should read it first. But if you are never going to read the first book then I think that you could easily read Block Shot as a standalone. Jared is first introduced in the first book. But I don't think that it would be necessary to read it to understand him.

the books are interconnected standalone books meaning that you will come across the main character from Long Shot, but you can read the first book without reading the second.
