Valerie Lovelock

Would this book be appropriate for a high school class to use? I am teaching a world cultures class and I think I would like to use this book as a suggested reading. I have a copy on the way to me, but I don't have it yet. Thoughts?

Alicia I don't know if you've gotten to read it yet, but I am reading it now for the same reason. I don't know the culture of your school or community, but I think it's a bit too graphic for a high school classroom. It deals with very adult issues, and there are some disturbing scenes involving rape, a hanging, and other violence. I don't believe high school is the best audience for this book, but you might be able to use excerpted chapters.
Seawitch Yes. I think it would be good. Another good choice for high school but not about slavery is Deacon King Kong.
Eve I read this as a junior in high school for AP literature, so if that's any indication... this probably isn't helpful two years later but I just thought I'd put my two cents in for anyone else asking themselves this question.
Maggie Lynne Are you American? If so, it depends which state you’re located in. In 10th grade my class in Massachusetts read “The Handmaid’s Tale.” If “The Handmaids Tale” was appropriate for a bunch of 15 year olds 15 years ago than this is more than appropriate for that age group now.
Janell I'd certainly be happy with my son reading it in high school (he just graduated). I think the way things are presented it would provoke good discussion without being too inappropriate - probably best for older grades, though. It probably depends on your school. Definitely read it yourself!
