I knew about MD from conversations on a humor podcast from Rooster Teeth, though there's nothing funny about the disease. It sounds gross.

Thank you, Andrea for finding the Tommy Orange quote. Sounds like he has it, maybe in a mild form. I guess it is not a Native American Indian thing.
