I am thoroughly confused by the ending. Did Kwan intend to come back from the cave or not? I find it difficult to believe it was an accident and she got lost. What did the author intend to tell us by the ending?

I think Tan leaves this question open for the reader to interpret. Since Olivia believes the baby is a reincarnation of Kwan, I would say that Kwan intended to get lost so she could be reincarnated as Olivia's child. On the other hand, how reliable is the narrator? The answer depends on what you believe and perhaps more importantly, what you want to believe.(less)
