In my review of this novel, I discuss that if you are a person who likes all your questions answered this is not a novel for you. I think Tan leaves this question open for the reader to interpret. Since Olivia believes the baby is a reincarnation of Kwan, I would say that Kwan intended to get lost so she could be reincarnated as Olivia's child. On the other hand, how reliable is the narrator? The answer depends on what you believe and perhaps more importantly, what you want to believe.
