A Goodreads user asked Shaun David Hutchinson:

Hi! First up I would like t say that I just finished your book: "We are the ants" and I loved it. Obviously, your book talks about a lot of issues like domestic violence, bullying and such but I was quite surprised that there was very little homophobia. Often these type of characters, homophobia plays a large part in bullying but your's has not. Don't get me wrong, it was really refreshing, but I just wondered why?

Shaun David Hutchinson Great question! That was a specific choice. Henry has a lot going on in his life, a lot of reasons to not press the button, but I didn't want his sexuality to be one of those reasons. I know that, realistically, his being gay probably would have also been a reason, but sometimes we write the world the way it is, and sometimes we write the world the way we want it to be.
