I loved this book. It's a great "beach read," perfect for the summer when you're looking for something compelling and fun. But was anyone else disappointed by the ending?

Geri McB I thought the ending was perfect for this story. Yes, I would have liked things to have turned out differently, but a happy ending wouldn't have wrung true for Polly/Pauline. And really, who's to say it wasn't a happy ending? She achieved her hidden goal, which is more than many people get in life.

Stacy Boyles I just finished the book. It was good but not as good as most of Lippman's prior work. I think I wanted Adam, Polly and 2 girls to begin a new rich life together. But that wouldn't be very Lippman. As it is, I wonder if she killed 3 people to keep from sharing.

Mrs. Read Perhaps this wasn’t what you were asking about, but I was struck by the ending’s inconsistency with all the previous chapters in tone and mood. The cheery wrap-up summarizing everyone’s happy destinies was the sort of thing I’d expect to find in the work of an inferior writer. Setting aside the question of which characters were “nice,” I was dismayed by the casual dismissal of Cath’s murder (heartbreaking for her parents and sister) as just one more loose end to tie up in the heroine’s journey to happiness. And though not a lawyer, I can think of a half-dozen reasons why the rapid legal execution of Gregg was about as probable as his dying quickly of leprosy.
