I had the same question while reading all those B. Traven books based in Mexico. They're constantly mentioning tiger attacks in the jungle.
As far as I can tell they're just talking about jaguars or ocelots. On the Wikipedia page for Jaguars it mentions that in Mexican Spanish they used to be referred to as tigers.
