Goodreads asked James Caskey:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

James Caskey Set concrete, attainable goals for yourself. Saying "I'm going to write a bestselling novel" is not a goal, it's a dream. Immediate goals are daily milestones, such as page or word counts. My own process is a daily word count, five or six days a week (although I usually wind up working on my day off, too).

If you write a thousand words a day, which is not an unreasonable goal in my opinion, you can write an immense novel in a year.
