To my mind, it is one of the most brilliant books published in the last century. Short, very readable, and a serious plot. Also fascinating for anyone who knows central France.

What I have no information about (except that on my old copy, which has now disappeared: probably fallen to pieces) is the film starring David Niven. I understand, alas, that there are no surviving copies, although one, perhaps, was recently discovered. I'd love to see this, although I fear it probably distorted the original book.

Do let me know if you find any further information. I hope to add a review on Amazon.
