The film by J Lee Thompson fortunately does still exist and is not that difficult to find. It is called Eye of the Devil and that's why it might be problematic to find the link to the book. The plot is somewhat simplified, but it does have the same atmosphere. While the book was quite traditional in its form, the film adaptation might even be a bit more avant-garde in terms of cinematography.

I hope you'll be able to find it and to enjoy it for what it is: different from the book but interesting on its own merits.

It is now available on Amazon, in several editions. I've ordered a copy and it should arrive shortly. To my mind, it is one of the most brilliant books published in the last century. Short, very readable, and a serious plot. Also fascinating for anyone who knows central France.
What I have no information about (except that on my old copy, which has now disappeared: probably fallen to pieces) is the film starring David Niven. I understand, alas, that there are no surviving copies, although one, perhaps, was recently discovered. I'd love to see this, although I fear it probably distorted the original book.
Do let me know if you find any further information. I hope to add a review on Amazon.
Best wishes,
A. Colin Wright
