I don't get why Tennessee's "friend", dead, was a part of this story? I suppose it could show that people don't need blood ties to love like family but seemed brief and unnecessary.

She gave them up so they would have a better life and years later she gave up her dreams to take care of her friend's daughter (Kenya). I didn't quite see how she could so easily take over Tennessee's identity. But maybe that is part of the point that our social work system is not as careful with African American children-as was the case when Kenya stayed with Doyle and his family after her mother's accident. Social services should not have allowed her to leave the hospital with strangers (as Doyle tried to tell his son's).(less)
