I don't get why Tennessee's "friend", dead, was a part of this story? I suppose it could show that people don't need blood ties to love like family but seemed brief and unnecessary.

The biological mother was a strong, giving woman, that's one of the points. I am also surprised to learn from Goodreads that the author, Patchett, is a child of Jeanne Ray. She (Ray) wrote the wonderful fiction, Julie and Romeo, set in the Boston area, not far from Run. Ray also created an even funnier book, Step Ball Change. Try these for more lighthearted reading.......(less)
