Indeed, as the book goes on he becomes an undeniable fool; his protagonist in Swift is his foil in this regard. However, this fool redeems himself bit by bit.

As for those who suggest the Pulitzer win was about identity politics, this, again, misses the point as seen in other characters' skewering of his novel's protagonist's identity.(less)
