Our son did not fully understand the depth of emotional and spiritual meaning throughout, but still enjoyed the adventure and the relationships between the characters. If you are considering the Wingfeather Saga for younger readers, you might want to at least skim through it first to decide if it is appropriate for the child you have in mind. There is a fair amount of peril & violence described, which may not be appropriate for all young children.
As far as reading the story on their own, my guess is that the books would be appropriate for ages 10+.(less)
