Angela Wells Rob/Adele told David about Rob in the well as a way to keep David. David was falling out of love with Adele (who was really Rob at that point) because this post-Westland Adele (Rob) was not the Adele David initially fell in love with as kids. So then Rob essentially started blackmailing David by holding the watch in the well over his head - if David ever left Adele (Rob), then Adele would claim that David killed Rob, as evidenced by Rob's body in the well and David's watch with it.
