Kate Fulford
Kate Fulford asked Zee Monodee:

Zee - can you share your thoughts on writing within a genre given your interesting background? I am drawn to writing about independent, intelligent and capable women, but I don’t think I would like to confine myself to a genre.

Zee Monodee Hi Kate!
I don't think you need to confine yourself to genre. I've written across genres (contemporary romance, espionage thrillers, urban fantasy), and it's not a hard thing to do. I also write strong women as my heroines and even sidekicks, and this is something that makes it across all the genres. A big feature of my writing is the idea/aspect of family - you can say it's a recurring theme in all my books - and this carries across all the genres I write.
My suggestion - find your theme; that one thing that will pervade everything else never mind the genre. For example, for you, it could be independent, intelligent, and capable women. Such a woman would be different in a small town setting as opposed to say, a post-apocalyptic setting, or even closer together, small town v/s corporate office. Just find your theme, your voice, your strength and even brand, and let this take you across genres. You don't have to be stuck to just one genre!
Hope this helps!
