In chapter 14, we find out Mama is pregnant. Billy hadn't noticed because he was so involved with his dogs. He's embarrassed and ashamed for not noticing. But then, the baby is never brought up again. Did something happen to the baby? Or was this a loose end that Wilson Rawls and his editor forgot to tie up? Or something else?

Mom seemed especially empathetic and philosophical about the deaths of the dogs?? Also, what the heck happened to Grandpa? I liked Grandpa and after the competition he isn't really mentioned again.(less)
