Philip asked:

In chapter 14, we find out Mama is pregnant. Billy hadn't noticed because he was so involved with his dogs. He's embarrassed and ashamed for not noticing. But then, the baby is never brought up again. Did something happen to the baby? Or was this a loose end that Wilson Rawls and his editor forgot to tie up? Or something else?

Jeannie My guess is the baby died. Not meaning to be morbid, but when the number of family members mentioned in the wagon as they are leaving is the same. (Three sisters, mom, dad, and Billy). Mom seemed especially empathetic and philosophical about the deaths of the dogs?? Also, what the heck happened to Grandpa? I liked Grandpa and after the competition he isn't really mentioned again.
Peter Although it's not mentioned again, they moved to town soon after. His mother had said she wanted them all to go to school, but the prospect of home schooling another child might have been too much.
Gail Cunningham I had the same question. It seems strange that it was worth mentioning once, but never again.
Audrey I am not sure. They probably just didn't want to add it since it didn't relate to the dogs.
