It's a satire of the Russian revolution.
The humans - ruling class (capitalist countries, the Russian upper class)
Old Major - Marx
Napoleon - Stalin
Snowball - Trotsky
Narrates the futility of communism and the revolution. If you read the end, you notice that Napoleon ends up acting much like the humans. A metaphor illustrating Stalin's reign and his version of communism, known as Stalinism (all pigs are equal but some pigs are more equal than other pigs).(less)
